When a tooth is fractured, severely damaged by decay or has a large filling, a crown (also called a cap) is often placed. A crown strengthens the tooth, protects the remaining tooth structure and can improve appearances. An individual crown will normally take two appointments. The first appointment (approximately 1 hour long) the tooth is prepared to accept the crown. All old fillings, decay and unsupported enamel are removed to insure a solid foundation for a new crown. Sometimes too much natural tooth is missing and this creates insufficient support. In this instance we must build up the tooth (core or post) in order to properly support the future crown. At the end of the first appointment a temporary will be placed.
At the second appointment (30 minutes long – 2 to 3 weeks later) the crown is tried on for fit, shape and color. The bite is then adjusted and if all is satisfactory the crown is cemented to the tooth.
The location of the tooth, the intensity of the bite and the desires of the patient are all factors used in deciding which type of crown is best suited for you. A crown can be all gold, porcelain fused to gold or all porcelain.
The life expectancy of a crown is 5 to 15 years. This is directly proportional to problems with gum tissues and the dangers of decay. The patient’s home maintenance (flossing, mouth rinses and brushing with fluoridated toothpaste) is essential for the success of the crown.
